Practicing

Students should have a quiet place to practice with an upright chair, a footstool and a music stand. Make a habit of practicing every day. First review pieces that have been completed to warm-up and then practice the new material. Play each piece as slowly as needed so that you can play the whole piece at an even tempo. Work on the more difficult sections to bring them up to speed. Get in the habit of practicing at the same time every day.

Since we play with our fingers and not a pick you need to keep the nails on the left hand short. It is best to have nails on the right shaped like the top of your finger and smooth as an uneven nail makes a harsh sound. Use a nail file to smooth the right hand fingernails.

When practicing sit up straight as you do in your lesson and keep you hands in the position you have been shown. Remember it is harder to break bad habits than to learn to play correctly the first time.
